The Art of the Festival, Brixen

The celebration of festivals, and their temporary suspension of the affairs of daily lie, is one the primary cultural phenomena of human community life. From the thousand-year jubilee of small ancient towns, to the Love Parade of the modern metropolis, feasts and festivals activate public spaces and set the stage for the orchestration of special events for extraordinary circumstances. Intensely enjoyed festivities create their own dimensions of time and space. When, every two years, the small South Tyrolean City of Brixen turns over its streets, arcades and squares to its various civic associations for a three-day Old City Festival, that's ground for celebration, for the people of the town no less than for visitors.

In August 2002, the festival atmosphere of Brixen's Old City Festival will also find a mirror in a series of art activities. Under the motto "The Art of the Festival," an international group of artists has been invited to address the subject of the life of the city and the atmosphere of its Old City Festival, no less than the culture of festivals in general. The result is a series of theme- and site-specific works. Dan Peterman (from Chicago), for instance, has created a "villa deponie" out of mats constructed from recycled materials. Roman Signer (St. Gallen) will be making use of metal fibers to prepare a construction that finally presents itself as a fountain sculpture. "Festivity" finally amounts to "laughter," insists the South Tyrolean artist Heinz Mader, and his contribution lies in the organization of a professional "laughter training course" in the midst of the Old City Festival. Brixen's Old City Festival thus becomes the backdrop for an artistic investigation into the essential meaning and existential importance of festive occasions. The art projects presented in the course of the festival will be a part of the festivities themselves, as forces of action, animation and intervention, and in many ways in collaboration with the various participating civic associations. Brixen will be a scene at which artists of international renown experimentally re-examine the constellation of art and festivity, with a view to a constructive stimulation of a greater awareness of the cultural importance of festivities. "The Art of the Festival" hasn't been conceived as simply an event within an event, and is rather to be seen as a subtle research that will serve as a starting point for a comprehensive investigation into a fundamental theme.

Die Kunst des Festes . 23.-25.August 2002. Brixen

Friederike Feldmann, Lara Favaretto, Ulrike Kohnen-Zülzer, Filippo Leonardi, Heinz Mader, Bernhard Martin, Dan Peterman, Peter Senoner, Roman Signer, Eva-Maria Schön.
